Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (D-RHI) was launched by the Government on Wednesday 9 April 2014. The D-RHI is a financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat in the home which will help the UK reduce its carbon emissions.
Those who join the scheme will receive quarterly payments, which are index linked, for seven years for the amount of clean, green renewable heat their renewable energy system produces.
This new scheme follows on from the success of the non-domestic scheme that commenced in 2011 which provides payments to industry, businesses and public sector organisations.
The renewable technologies that will benefit from the scheme are as follows:
The D-RHI is open to everyone – home owners, social and private landlords, and people who build their own homes. It’s available to households both on and off the grid (natural gas supply).
The scheme is designed to bridge the gap between the cost of fossil fuel heat sources and renewable heat alternatives. You will get paid for every kilowatt hour (kWh) your system produces. Payments per technology are as follows:
Air source heat pumps – 7.3p/kWh
Ground source heat pumps – 18.8p/kWh
Biomass boilers – 12.2p/kWh
Solar thermal – 19.2 p/kWh
To apply for the D-RHI, you will need to visit the OFGEM website (www.ofgem.gov.uk) and complete an online application form. You will also need to supply the following information:
A Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificate number. This is at the top of the certificate and looks like: MCS 01234567-A
An EPC number. This is at the top of your certificate and looks like: 1234-5678-9012-3456-7890. Make sure your EPC includes a heat load at the bottom of it.
A Green Deal Advice Report number. This is at the top of your report and looks like: 12345-6789-0123-456.
Any future or current renewable energy system must be certified under the MCS. Any current renewable heating systems must have been first commissioned on or after 15 July 2009. The date will be on your MCS certificate.
If you successfully applied for the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP), the application dates have been staggered to allow for the payment you received.
